Tigers Back in AP Top 5, Hold at No. 4 in Coaches Poll
09.13.04 (6:32 am)   [edit]
BATON ROUGE (lsuports.net) -- LSU moved back into the top five in the nation in the Associated Press poll coming in at No. 5 this week following its 53-3 win over Arkansas State on Saturday.

The Tigers remained at No. 4 in the nation in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, which was also released on Sunday. In the AP poll, the Tigers moved one spot, jumping ahead of Florida State, who fell to Miami, 16-10, in overtime on Friday.

LSU has now been ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the AP poll for 16 straight weeks, dating back to the Sept. 21 poll last year. The Tigers have spent the 18 consecutive weeks in the coaches poll, a streak that dates back to the Sept. 14 last season.

The 16 consecutive weeks in the AP top 10 is the longest streak for LSU since spending 19 straight weeks there during the 1986 and 1987 seasons.

The top five teams in coaches poll remained the same for the third straight week with Southern Cal at No. 1, followed by Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU and Miami.

Saturday's contest against Auburn will pit the Tigers of LSU against the 14th-ranked Tigers of Auburn. Auburn is also ranked No. 15 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.

Other SEC teams in the polls include Florida at No. 9 in the AP poll and No. 11 in the coaches poll and Tennessee at No. 13 in both polls.

ESPN announced on Sunday that College Gameday would be heading to Auburn for Saturday's SEC Western Division showdown between LSU and Auburn. It will mark the second time this year that LSU will be involved in a game in which College Gameday will be on hand. College Gameday opened the season in Baton Rouge for the Oregon State contest.

SLU avenges defeat with rout of No. 6 McNeese
09.13.04 (5:08 am)   [edit]

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -- Martin Hankins racked up 439 passing yards and threw five touchdowns to lead Southeastern Louisiana to a    51-17 upset of Southland Conference powerhouse McNeese State on Saturday.

Hankins completed 38-of-54 passes for 439 yards and no interceptions while Felton Huggins caught 13 passes for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Lions (2-0).

Southeastern outscored McNeese State (1-1) 35-3 in the second half as Hankins hit Ray Perkins, Hutch Gonzales and Jeffery Howard for three of his four TDs in the second half.

Perkins rushed for 110 yards for Southeastern, which piled up 595 yards against the three-time defending Southland Conference champions. Southeastern reconstituted a college football program last season after shutting down the program in 1985. Saturday's win was the first road win since a 30-24 victory at Southwest Missouri on Nov. 3, 1984.

The Lions' defense also did its part, forcing four turnovers and harassing Cowboys quarterback Scott Pendarvis all night long.

Pendarvis completed 19-of-36 passes for 213 yards, but he was intercepted three times. He threw one touchdown, a 33-yard pass to Drew Blanchard with 1:40 left in the first half.

SLU led 16-14 at the halftime.

McNeese threatened on its first drive of the second half as it drove to the Southeastern 21, but Chris Thomas fumbled at the 17 and the Lions recovered the ball to end the drive.

Five plays later, Hankins found Huggins in one-on-one coverage as McNeese State brought a blitz, and Huggins shook off a tackle and raced 53 yards to the end zone to give the Lions a 23-14 lead.

McNeese State closed to 23-17 on Travis Pickering's 35-yard field goal, but the Lions scored two touchdowns in the final 3:10 of the third quarter as Hankins hit Perkins and Gonzales with touchdowns to put Southeastern ahead 37-17.

The Lions added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth as Howard caught a 2-yard pass from Hankins and Choni Francis scored on a 14-yard run in the final minute.

hot air
09.10.04 (8:56 am)   [edit]

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above sea level. You are 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude."

The woman smiled and said "You must be a Republican!"  "I am" replied the man, "how do you know?"  "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of the information and I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat."  "I am" replied the balloonist, "how do you know?"  "Well", said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you cannot keep and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were before we met, but now, somehow,it's my fault!

One liners

“It was so hot today,” Leno said, “John Edwards was using John Kerry's head for shade.”

If I were a gay supporter of John Kerry I’d already be driving around with my campaign bumper sticker proudly proclaiming: “John Kerry: The Bigger the Head - The Better the Head!”

From Jared:John Kerry walks into a bar and the bartender says "Why the long face?"

When John Kerry doesn't win the election, he is going to endorse a new product from Johnson and Johnson called "Real big Head and Shoulders"
